Where there is no belief in the soul, there is very little drama…Either one is serious about salvation or one is not.  And it is well to realize that the maximum amount of seriousness admits the maximum amount of comedy.  Only if we are secure in our beliefs can we see the comical side of the universe.—Flannery O’Oconnor

A child kicks its legs rhythmically through excess, not absence, of life. Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough… It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again,” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again,” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike: it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.—G.K. Chesterton

‘Before we can pray “Thy Kingdom come”, we must be willing to pray “my kingdom go”.

—Alan Redpath

‘When I pray, coincidences happen, and when I don’t pray, they don’t.’—William Temple

People are always saying, “Jesus is all I need.”  You will never know that Jesus is all that you need until Jesus is all that you’ve got.  Then and only then will you know that Jesus is all that you need.—Ron Dunn

You wouldn’t be so shocked by your own sin if you didn’t have such a high opinion of yourself.—Lynette Chambers

Those who worship God only from fear, would worship the Devil if he should appear.—unknown

Resentment is the poisen we swallow while we hope the other person dies.—unknown

There is no odor so bad as that wich arises from goodness tainted.—Henry David Thoreau

We are all worms.  But I do believe that I am a glowworm.—Winston Churchill

“Spirituality” wrongly understood or pursued is a major source of human misery and rebellion against God.—Dallas Willard

I believe in getting into hot water.  It keeps you clean.—G.K. Chesterton

People must be charmed into righteousness.—Reinhold Niebuhr

All that in not eternal is eternally useless.—C.S. Lewis

If you can’t get drunk when your entire world comes crashing down at your feet, why did God make alcohol to begin with?—Charles Frazier, Thirteen Moons

There are only two things that pierce the human heart.  One is beauty.  The other is affliction.—Simone Weil

The fact is I think I am a verb instead of a personal pronoun.  A verb is anything that signifies to be; to do; or to suffer.  I signify all three.—U.S. Grant

When a cat sits on a hot stove it immediately gets off and won’t sit another hot stove.   It won’t sit on a cold one either.  Sometimes we can overlearn our lesson.—unknown

You can safely assume that you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.—Anne Lamott

When we expect a friend or lover to be able to take away our deepest pain, we expect from him or her something that cannot be given by human beings.  No human being can understand us fully.  No human being can give us unconditional love.  No human being can offer constant affection.  No human being can enter into the core of our being, heal our deepest brokenness.  When we forget that and expect from others more than they can give, we will be quickly disillusioned.  For when we do not receive what we expect, we easily become resentful, bitter, revengeful and even violent.—-Henri Nowen

  1. Joe, what a cool blog!!!! I just sort of felt high on a mountain top smelling the blue spruce, the wonderful mountain air, drinking in some of that crystal clear spring water…..way to go. Its so good to see you and Jay’s writing

  2. interesting quotes,I collect lots of them also. However, the one about getting drunk when your world crashes bothers me. At a time like that is when we need to be most sober, and i always think of alcohol as more of a curse than a help to humanity. Hate to read the Lord in as partner on that job. I have watched alcohol facilitate more destruction than imaginable in loved ones and others. Try this experiment,go into a saloon, order non-alcoholic drinks and watch the other folks as the who hit john takes over. Now I know why most bartenders don’t drink.God bless all.
